Social prescribing: why is it being discussed more in France in 2026?

Updated on August 7, 2026. "Social prescribing" is gaining prominence in prevention and mental health policies. The Ministry of Health dedicated an updated news item to it on June 26, 2026.

What is it about?

The principle is to direct an individual towards non-medical activities or resources adapted to their needs: physical, cultural, artistic, community activities, or social support. The objective is to act on social, relational, and environmental determinants that can contribute to well-being.

What social prescribing is not

It does not mean that a cultural workshop or a walk replaces necessary medical or psychological treatment. The Ministry presents this approach more as a possible complement, still underdeveloped in France, and as a way to broaden support.

Why is the subject of interest for prevention?

Isolation, lack of activity, social difficulties, and living environment can influence mental health. Structured referral to local resources can help some people reconnect or resume an adapted activity.

The link with physical activity

Regular physical activity is recognized by the WHO as beneficial for physical and mental health. Within the framework of social prescribing, it can be one of the proposed options when it corresponds to the person's situation and abilities.
